Getting Married at Islington Town Hall: A Photographer’s Guide

Islington Town Hall on Upper Street is one of the most quietly stylish places to marry in London. The 1920s building holds Islington's register office, and its rooms have the kind of character that never needs dressing up: rich wood panelling, Art Deco lines and generous natural light. Couples come here from all over the city for good reason. This is a photographer's guide to the rooms, the light, and what to do with Upper Street once the register is signed.

The four ceremony rooms

Islington licenses four main rooms, so the building scales from a two-witness elopement to a party of eighty five:

• The Mayor's Parlour seats up to four guests. Snug, panelled and personal, it is made for elopements and tiny weekday weddings.
• Room 99 seats around twenty, with lighter painted walls and a wooden floor: the freshest, most modern-feeling of the four.
• The Richmond Suite seats up to sixty, with a traditional layout, plenty of natural light and a proper aisle between the chairs, which makes the entrance feel like an entrance.
• The Council Chamber is the grandest: a vaulted room with horseshoe seating that holds fifty guests on weekdays and up to eighty five at weekends, and gives every seat a clear view of the two of you.

How the rooms photograph

Dark panelling worries some couples, but it is a gift on camera: it makes skin tones warm, makes whites and florals sing, and gives every frame a depth that plain modern rooms never manage. The Council Chamber's horseshoe means faces, not the backs of heads, in every wide shot. And because ceremonies here are short, the emotion arrives concentrated: the walk in, the vows, the kiss, the signatures, all inside half an hour. My approach is documentary, so I let that half hour happen and catch it as it does.

Afterwards: Upper Street and beyond

Step outside and Islington does the rest. Camden Passage is two minutes away, all antique shopfronts and flagstones, made for unhurried couple portraits. Islington Green sits just across the road, Duncan Terrace Gardens is a quiet leafy cut-through, and the Regent's Canal towpath at City Road Basin is close enough for a detour. If you fancy green space and long light, Highbury Fields is a ten minute walk north. A red bus on Upper Street costs nothing and looks like London forever.
