Getting Married at Wandsworth Town Hall: A Photographer’s Guide

Wandsworth Town Hall on Wandsworth High Street is South West London's register office, and for couples this side of the river it is the natural place to marry: dignified rooms, straightforward booking, and some of the best portrait country in London within a few minutes' drive. We are based in South London ourselves, so this is home turf. Here is a photographer's guide to the rooms and what to do with the light afterwards.

The three ceremony rooms

The register office offers rooms across three sizes, so the building works for a two-witness wedding as well as a hundred-guest celebration:

• The Elizabeth Room takes up to ten people. Intimate and calm, it suits elopements and small weekday ceremonies where it is just the people who matter most.
• The Alexandra Room seats up to forty five, the comfortable middle ground: close family and friends without losing the personal feel.
• The Grand Chamber holds up to a hundred, a proper civic room for a full ceremony with everyone there.

How it photographs

Civic rooms like these give me what I need: daylight, height and clean lines. In the smaller rooms I work close and quiet, and the pictures feel like the room did, everyone within arm's reach of the couple. In the Grand Chamber I can hang back and let the scale show: the walk down the aisle, the sea of familiar faces, the moment the room stands. No flash, no posing, just the day as it happened.

Afterwards: rivers, parks and home-turf portraits

This is where marrying in SW18 pays off. Wandsworth Park's riverside plane trees are five minutes away, King George's Park starts practically behind the town hall, and Old York Road has a village feel for something more relaxed. Push slightly further and you have Wandsworth Common's long avenues, or the riverside at Putney. Golden hour along the Thames here has a strong claim to the best portrait light in South West London, and because we photograph across this area constantly, we already know where it falls.
