Stoke Newington Town Hall Weddings: A Photographer’s Guide

Stoke Newington Town Hall is North London's Art Deco gem, and among couples who know it, one of the most loved places to marry in the city. Hackney runs its ceremonies in two licensed spaces here, and between them the building covers everything from a formal chamber ceremony to a full-scale party under one roof. Here is a photographer's guide to both, and to the neighbourhood outside.

The Council Chamber and the Assembly Hall

• The Council Chamber seats up to eighty three guests, fifty on the floor and thirty three up on the balcony. Walnut panelling, a curved mahogany speaker's table, and a genuine sense of occasion: it feels like marrying inside a piece of civic history, because you are.
• The Assembly Hall is the 1930s showpiece: a grand Art Deco hall with its original sprung Canadian maple dance floor, scaling to hundreds for a reception. Marry in the Chamber, then dance in the Hall, and the whole day happens in one building.

The balcony in the Chamber deserves a special mention for photographs: it gives me a high, quiet vantage point most register offices simply do not have, so you get the wide frame of the whole room mid-ceremony without a camera ever crossing your eyeline.

How it photographs

Art Deco interiors love a camera: strong lines, warm wood, geometry everywhere. Dark panelling makes dresses and flowers glow, and the Assembly Hall's scale means the evening photographs feel like the party actually felt: big, loud and alive on that sprung maple floor. My approach stays documentary from the first frame to the last dance: I follow the day rather than direct it.

Afterwards: Church Street and Clissold Park

Stoke Newington Church Street is right outside, with its village feel, painted shopfronts and pubs. Clissold Park is a few minutes' walk: deer, an eighteenth-century house, and long tree-lined paths for unhurried couple portraits. And for something quietly extraordinary, Abney Park's overgrown Victorian arboretum is one of the most romantic portrait settings in London. All within a ten minute radius of the front steps.
